Vehicle telematics for EcoDriving in simple way
Enhance Sygic Navigation with real-time eco drive score of the driver.
This idea came out during Sygic`s Innovation Day. Sygic`s in-house competition which aims to bring creative and challenging ideas to our business. Teams has 24 hours to develop an idea and present it in 4 minutes to the all employees, including CEO and top management.
Why Eco Drive?
Eco drive is huge topic in fleet industry. Cost cutting of the fleet is on the table also for 2014 and space for enhancing efficiency of the fleet is drastically reducing. The result is major focus on driver’s behavior while driving the car.
This is not new information at all for the industry. What really makes this blog newsworthy, is Sygic’s approach.
Talking about vehicle telematics, we talk about huge amount of complicated data flowing into your car’s computer from different sensors. How to make this data clear and use them for something helpful?
With the support of current computing technologies we can improve the drivers’ efficiency, but it should be executed mainly by driver’s attitude change. Human beings are not machines, they very often behave irrationally and emotionally. Above the all driving is about freedom about emotions. Let’s provide the driving style assessment the way humans accept and understand.
Put the data simple and show them in the context, where the driver would expect to see the information about his driving behavior. Inside the navigation.
Our developer team focusing on telematics and connected car solutions decided to apply for this approach. In 24h hours’ time, the team was able to transfer real-time CANBUS cable data directly into the side bar of Sygic Navigation App. Even more, they succeeded to do it in a way that make sense and facilitate the understanding of the driver about his behavior.
Driver can see immediately if he is driving “eco” and if not, what he should do to get back on the “green path” (means save fuel and car). If accelerating or breaking too hard, having inserted wrong gear, or keeping RPM too high, Sygic Navigation will tell you.
What we were able to develop in 24 hours is a simple but working demo. And what is more important, this demo showed us where to focus in approaching complicated topic of vehicle telematics. We made telematics to make sense even to our accounting department in 4 minutes presentation!
There are many other ways to use your car computer data and still much work to do to bring a complete product to the market, but today we can say that Sygic knows the right path:
Use the data from the car to help the driver. Put them simple, translate them to comprehensive language and show them where driver would expect to see them.
